Natalie Rankin

I can head into any professional production knowing that I have all the tools I need to build a performance according to my artistry, rather than the limitations of my instrument.

What people are saying…

I’ve been in and out of voice lessons since I was 12 years old - and my time with Natalie as a voice coach left me singing more confidently and freely than ever before. Before working with Natalie, I found it nearly impossible to bring myself to set up a singing workout routine. She made me feel safe and curious about what my voice can do - something that led to an exponential amount of growth in my abilities. Not only is she a wonderful teacher, but she is a student herself. There’s something so encouraging about working with someone as a teacher who is still working towards bettering herself as an artist and vocalist - and I think it makes her a wonderful teacher. One of my favorite things is how she acknowledges how vulnerable being a singer is - and how she empowers you to grow both as a vocalist and a person. I appreciate her grace. Through working with Natalie as a voice coach, I am a more confident, curious, and intentional artist with my voice.

My Story

FROM SHAKY FOUNDATION TO SOLID GROUND:

Growing up in Nashville, TN, I was always surrounded by music, and singing before I could speak in full sentences.

Country and Folk artists like Trisha Yearwood, Joni Mitchell, and Bonnie Raitt shaped my early musical tastes (thanks Mom).

As a teenager, I obsessed over Avril Lavigne, Paramore, and Kelly Clarkson. Along the way, I discovered a love for performing in Musical Theatre, and I learned as I had always learned:

by mimicking.

This time, I was copying the sounds of Idina Menzel, Audra McDonald, and Sutton Foster. Singing was my happy place, and I was applauded for my “natural talent” - but I had huge gaps in my abilities and understanding. I had a big “chest voice” sound, an airy “head voice” sound,

and absolutely NOTHING in between.

I always had to switch between my “two voices” to get through a song, and I felt as though I sounded like two completely different singers from phrase to phrase.

Every time I tried to make the powerful “chest voice” go higher for those big money notes, the sounds were out of control and unpredictable. I had a shaky foundation and zero information about how to strengthen it. That middle ground felt mysterious and elusive. I always knew there had to be more - there had to be some way to fill that gap and make my voice feel more reliable.

I didn’t receive any technical training until studying Musical Theatre at Texas State University, where I was introduced to One Voice.

Then, everything shifted.

Finally, here was a methodology that provided clear language and effective tools, and the understanding I had always craved. No more metaphors, no more vague concepts, and no more guessing! My “gaps” became goals, instead of dead ends. Here was a concrete way to build my skill set as a singer! Through developing my understanding of the One Voice theories and an efficient, consistent vocal practice,

so long, shaky foundation!

I now have solid ground beneath me as a singer. I am known as a consistent, confident performer. I can head into any professional production knowing that I have all the tools I need to build a performance according to my artistry, rather than the limitations of my instrument. I am passionate about guiding others to this same solid foundation and artistic freedom. I want prospective clients to know that singing can make sense!
