Thoughts

What you wish you knew vocally at 17?

Oh, man. Umm, everything I’ve learned the past 6 years? If I have to narrow it down to one thing, I wish I knew that it was okay to not be right and/or not have an answer. I remember finding myself in conversation with friends about vocal pedagogy and looking back, we were all regurgitating information our teachers had told us, despite never really asking ourselves what we believed to be true about singing. I wish I had known the power of “I don’t know”. Most lessons I’ve learned and answers I’ve received in life can be traced back to an “I don’t know”, and singing is no exception.

What has been your most memorable singing moment?

One of my most memorable singing moments has to be working on the Hedwig score. I was lucky enough to play Yitzhak in the show, and had to do a bunch of different styles, including a Whitney Houston impression.  It’s the hardest I’ve ever worked on a show vocally and I walked away really proud of what I had accomplished.

What should the world know about singing?

That it is no different than any other skill we acquire throughout life. If we are willing to put our time into deliberate practice, we can achieve our goals and make the sounds we want to make.

What’s your favorite One Voice theory, concept, or technique?

I do believe that all the theories work together with one another, so it’s difficult to choose just one. BUT resonintial awareness seriously rocks my world. That “weird spot” in my voice that always gave me trouble finally makes sense to me and I, at last, understand how to navigate it. So many songs I could never sing the way I wanted to are back on the table for me, which is just the best feeling in the world!
